We have launched an inpatient integrative medicine consult service – the first of its kind in Maine and rare among American hospitals. In doing so, we have brought our patient-centered healing philosophy into the hospital setting.
We are able to perform acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, mind-body therapies to help patients manage symptoms such as pain, nausea/vomiting, constipation, shortness of breath, anxiety, insomnia and many others. Often in the inpatient setting, we see patients who have a new diagnosis or flare up of a chronic disease; in these cases we are able to offer them diet/lifestyle recommendations and supplements or botanicals that they may take at home to help build their resiliency, possibly allowing them to cut down on some of their Western medications in concert with their primary care doctors or specialists. We also can guide them to providers in the community for services such as yoga, meditation, taichi, acupuncture, osteopathy, etc.
In certain cases, we also will provide home visits for integrative consults and follow up treatments for acupuncture, osteopathy, and mind-body medicine.
